murmurART is proud to announce the debut solo show of artist Nancy Fouts, curated by Flora Fairbairn.
The exhibition will take place in the artist's incredible Camden house, a 19th century former vicarage and for the last 20 years Fouts's home, workshop and cabinet of the many objects and curios she has meticulously collected, created and altered.
Flora Fairbairn, show curator, comments: "when someone recommended I should see the work of Nancy Fouts I decided to have a quick look at the images to hear what all the fuss was about. When I saw how creative and original her work was, I rushed around to meet her at her extraordinary house as quick as I could. I was not disappointed and even the house itself added to the intrigue. She is a fantastic artist and definitely 'one to watch' and I am thrilled to see this exhibition come together."
Described by Les Coleman as an 'Art Prankster', Fouts playfully distills and disrupts the roles and associations of objects, icons and relationships. Drawing from Surrealism and the Absurd her sculptural arrangements toy with themes of entrenched meaning, religious iconography and black humour. The artist cites Avant-gardists such as Marcel Marien and Rene Magritte as strong early influences.
Sir Peter Blake says: "I love the work of Nancy Fouts, she makes the everyday object extraordinary".
Gavin Turk says: "Nancy turns the function inside out with her brainstorming made manifest".
'Thimble with Needle' perfectly captures Fouts' playful approach. Undoing our preconceptions of the role and function of this needle and the thimble, the artwork is empowered by its striking simplicity, piercing clarity and strange beauty. It asks the viewer to question their surroundings from the most mundane point upwards.
In 'Chick on Trap' a fluffy chick perches on a loaded mouse trap, its fragile existence in a torturous and momentary equilibrium with the torque of the trap. In a series that parodies Christian merchandise, figurines of Jesus in crucifixion pose are altered to show His souvenir skipping with a rope, saluting a boxing victory and providing the underarm support of a crutch. Her idiosyncratic compositions are then photographed in the white studio aesthetic, perfectly framing their arrangement and tensions while subverting the expectations of this consumer product setting.
The debut solo show will consist of a selection of Fouts's sculptures, sculptural collages and limited edition photographs presented in the creative atelier in which the artist lives and works at 52 Oakley Square. The show will be open to the public on Friday 4th June 2010 and run until Friday 25th June 2010.
Opening hours: Wed - Sat 12 - 6pm and by appointment +44(0)20 7739 9221
