Between Bridges, an artist run space on the corner of Three Colts Lane, is showing works by German artist Ull Hohn (1960-1995). The natural light of this angular space provides the backdrop for an interesting juxtaposition of works. Turning away from the broad brush strokes of the Neue Wilden, Hohn embarked on a more precise and delicate approach to painting. This current exhibition shows the 9 Relief Paintings of oil on wood that toy with attraction and repulsion.

Sensory confusion is aroused by their chocolate-cum-excrement appearance and texture, and their strange primitive quality. Hohn's landscapes, on the other hand, are much more direct and representational. The selection from 1990 recall something between Valhalla, Nibelung myth and maybe even a Disney classic. The four paintings from 1992/93 are equally dream-like but lack the bizarre kitsch of the others - something that makes them more compelling.

It is perhaps significant, since Richter is currently on show at the Portrait Gallery, that these landscape images have been noted for their debt to that very artist. A slightly incongruous melange, to say the least, but worth it for Roz's sandwiches 'neath the bridge, near the taxi cabs.

Ull Hohn is showing at Between Bridges until this Sunday. You can find out more about it if you click here.
