This week focuses on making sure you don't miss a whole series of exhibitions all due to close this week.
FRIDAY
Following the success of the The Brian Mercer Residency in 2008 (an opportunity for sculptors wishing to develop their skills with bronze under the expert guidance of the artists at the Fonderia Artistica Mariani), this is the last chance to see Studio Gallery - an exhibition celebrating the work of Immanuel Klein and Briony Marshall, two of this year's residency artists.
SATURDAY
Having launched the? Converse/Dazed? 2010? Emerging? Artists? Award today marks the last opportunity to see the exhibition, which inaugurates a new? art? competition? designed? to? offer? an? exciting? platform? to? emerging? artists. On the award panel is Tim? Marlow,? Sadie? Coles,? Isobel? Harbison,? Francesca? Gavin,? Mark? Titchner? and? Tom? Morton. This years winner is Peter ?Ainsworth who graduated from studying MA Photography? at? London? College? of? Communication (2007).
SUNDAY
Closing today The Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition is the world's largest open submission contemporary art exhibition. Now in its 242nd year, the exhibition continues the tradition of showcasing work by both emerging and established artists in all media including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film. For this year's exhibition Stephen Chambers and David Chipperfield, have selected works for the exhibition around the theme of 'Raw'.
27 Senses is the Chisenhale Gallery's summer exhibition. Curated by Lina Dzuverovic and produced by Electra, 27 Senses is a group exhibition focused around the participating artists' investigation into a forgotten moment in the life of seminal artist Kurt Schwitters. Participating artists: Kenneth Goldsmith/ UbuWeb, Carl Michael von Hausswolff/ Selmer Nilsen, Karl Holmqvist, Jutta Koether, and Eline McGeorge.
This time at V22 for the second in its series of installation solo shows Phyllida Barlow's Swamp. Some of Barlow's larger sculptures can't leave the room they are made in without being dismantled. This means the current venue is their only habitat and that's why Barlow's use of 'room-peculiar installations' to describe her work seems particularly relevant.

THURSDAY
This Thursday is the opening of another of LimaZulu's Summer Season shows. The title is 'No Long Term', the artist is Seth Pick, and it is at the usual venue at 167 Hermitage Rd, but there is nothing more to glean from the send out or their website except the picture displayed above, so go find out. Their website is here.
FRIDAY
On Friday the interesting-looking, archway-based, not-for-profit organisation TOandFOR open a group show built around time-based media and entitled ULTRA-MOTION / ANTI-STATIC. While their website provides a brief introduction to the artists works - Charlotte Turton's manifesto of recent trends in political rhetoric tickles my fancy - it also makes a decent point about the Archway/Holloway area, namely that there is very little art going on there despite its creative neighbours. The roaming space, which also provides workshops, will hopefully continue to buck this trend.
SATURDAY
Saturday has the third instalment of the Short Film Movement at Housman's bookshop at the start of the Caledonian Road. Although I haven't made either of the first two, their introduction makes a decent point:
"Many great short films are made and go unnoticed. Most of the time they can be just as exhilarating and poignant as any feature.
"We believe Short Films should not simply be seen as a mere tool toward greater cinematic adventures, they are art-forms which demand to be celebrated.
"The Short Film Movement+ not only celebrates short films but also recognises the importance of interrelating the language of film with other art forms such as, poetry, music, dance and so forth.
"The Short Film Movement+ will host regular gatherings of short films with a political/ ethical/ social etc... nature. In essence films made by artistic filmmakers which have messages and deal with the human condition. Films will be screened alongside other art forms with similar themes followed by discussions."
It is RSVP to attend on theshortfilmmovement at gmail dot com.
