Takayuki Hara is an artist whom I greatly admire. His ability to swamp a vast surface full of delicately drawn detail and depth can surely not be easily surpassed. Currently studying at City & Guilds in London, he has developed his unique style and seemingly managed to embrace his own identity using his art as an outlet. Although his preoccupation is dark in terms of content with figures acting out often-violent homoerotic scenes and gruesome skeletons walking in and out of the viewer's eye line, humour is still an integral part of his work.

This work concerns the emotions and brewing situations that obsessions and dreams can cause after the repression of any person's sexuality and ultimately their personal identity. His method of drawing enhances the content with its friendly comic book style. He often uses patterns from Japanese prints and Zen gardens, which are raked and nurtured daily giving them a sanitised and geometric feel. It has often wow-ed me with the depth of its content.

I spoke with him yesterday at the launch of the Salon show and he informed me that he has three pieces circulating over the period of the show. This is really exciting since each of his pieces are all very different entities form one another. Other highlights of the show for me were the work of Jacky Tsai and Yeon Lee. So, despite the poorly curated and cramped gallery space, the show is still well worth a visit.

Takayuki Hara is also exhibiting in another new show at St Pancras church this evening. If the way his work shone out last night can be half achieved at this exhibition opening, then i shall be more than content.
