It all started in Stockholm in February 1995, when the first freesheet was released on their metro system. In 1999 Associated Newspapers replicated the idea with Metro in the UK. Then at the start of September 2006 came London Lite and News International's The London Paper for the evening rush, with light-hearted news, big images and social advice unraveling from the celebrity-stuffed middle pages.

But what happened to reading books on the underground, what happened to the well-publicised Poetry on the Underground, whats going on with the woefully selected Platform for Art posters? It's getting worse, projectors and flat screen TVs are going underground, showing a purgatorial non-stop advert break. Couldn't they at least throw in an interval of substance to make us feel less trapped in these tunnels of consumer aspiration?

So thank God for Notes from the Underground, a freesheet that focuses on new creative writing and illustration, fiction, poetry and culture. They have already managed to source contributions from Will Self, Terry Jones and Russell Brand, and even better from up and coming talent like the comedian Jonny Sweet. The next of the monthly issues will be distributed between the 9th and the 13th March, or find out where to get it here.
