New contemporaries have announced their selection for 2008. Well worth a peruse, this annual, independant selection of new and emerging artists has been consistantly good for the past 20 years. Have a look at their first pick from 1989, which included Hirst and Abigail Lane at the bottom of this page.

The idea behind it is to help expose art from educational establishments in established spaces - and so to overcome preconceptions that artworks from recent graduates are incomplete or undeveloped versions of finished work still to come. The concept of multiple space shows is promising too, and surely the way that art will increasingly be exposed to its audience as we go forward:

"New Contemporaries is an annual exhibition without a building, and has had beneficial relationships with many important galleries. The exhibition travels and this movement, which is an integral part of the structure, means a different relationship to audience and place."

You can see it at: Club Row in Rochelle school, London from 8 October - 4 November; Cornerhouse, Manchester, 23 November - 20 January 08; The New Art Gallery, Walsall, 13 July - 2 September. Stick it in the diary.
