We attended the artbelowzero? monthly art and music event last night. The concept behind what they are doing is an interesting one, geared as it is squarely at art being seen by other artists, rather than buyers. Their goal is to respond to "the need for artists/designers to come together and cast a roving eye over their peers work, to engage in discussion and to forge new friendships and alliances."
The issue at stake is that the community they are trying to build is rigorously inclusive. The artists are not exclusively undergraduates, as their '-belowzero?' suffix would suggest, the disciplines range widely across art and design, and the event centres around music and art. It is in any case difficult to present an specific tone in the vast atrium of Westbourne Studios and if it was difficult to grasp what their choice of works was about, at least this lively and friendly atmosphere united it.
Rather than be confused by the variety, it seemed best to concentrate on one artists work, and one that stood out was the sculpture/performance piece by French Artist and MA student at the Royal College of Art Melodie Mousset. Entitled 'With or without you' it showed a woman and her moulded sculpture both garbed in Mousset's trademark multicoloured prints, sharing ipod earphones, and, as the artist herself puts it, imitating each other. Have a look at a picture of it here.
You can still catch the show this afternoon, though not the performance, and its worth looking out for next month's one on their website here.
