Showcasing the development of MA Photography students' work at this half way stage in the course, the LCC interim show exhibition provides a platform upon which they are able to test the waters for gallery presentation of their work. Conceptualised as a one-year intensive fine art oriented course, the works on display combine aspects of commercial photography and more abstract artistic flair.

As one would expect, much of the exhibitors' work is still very much in progress. As Programme Director, Anne Williams, indicates, the interim showcase forces students to really consider how their work appears in gallery spaces, taking into account aspects such as lighting and even how the photographs appear behind a glass frame.

These are important considerations for whatever kind of work they eventually go on to do. Reminding us that "photography is on the cusp between fine art and commercial art", Williams explains that the students come from a range of artistic backgrounds and use the course "as a means of diversifying their work and experimenting with new techniques and concepts."

Yet in spite of the unpolished effect, there is undoubtedly talent and potential on display. Particularly striking were Irina de Bertier's full-moon nightscape and Doriane Fereau's black and white panorama, which reveals the eclectic chaos of a pathological collector's abode. Several students also take an interesting approach in choosing to utilise staged portraitures and fictional portraits, combining the fictional and the filmic with reality.

Lastly, it is quite remarkable to think that, when it comes to the final exhibition in November, the work of students on the full-time one year course will be displayed alongside their counterparts on the part-time two year course, and no one would be any the wiser as to which was which.

The MA Photography Interim exhibition runs until Friday 24th April. Their final exhibition will be on display from 24-28 November at LCC. Click here for more details.
