This exhibition is the first European show for the American artist Dan Fischer. Born only in 1977 he has managed to scale plenty high heights recently. The Tate has bought some of his work and he is exhibiting extensively.

His work on display the other evening was a collection of very finely drawn, almost mechanical, representations of iconic photographs. The likes of Picasso and Pollock each have there beings reproduced by Fischer.

He uses a grid method for his detailed pencil drawings. The grid is left behind in the picture and works to good effect as textured background. Without the grid one would be excused for believing they were prints of photographs, such is the detail within each piece.

He is a masterful drawer; of this there can really be no doubt. However, I was left questioning weather or not I could find a core point behind the pictures. Impressive? Yes. Engaging? Somewhat. Thought provoking? I guess they must have been since it is now several days after the show and I am writing this.

Conceptual art seems to be at the forefront of the western art scene of late and too often I find the form to be lacking. Quite possibly this exhibition has left the same feeling in my mouth, only the flavours have been reversed. Form is certainly there but is there much behind the pencil marks? I shall have to digest them a while longer before making up my mind.

The show is well worth a visit and the gallery space is certainly mighty beautiful. it will be running until early august so you have plenty of time to arrange a visit during your weeks to come.
