The photography of Bethany Murray's is largely based around the use of the body as performative instrument and a vessel for transmitting emotion. She uses her own self as the central performer while sometimes others are used as peripheral figures in the image. Essentially her own body is the protagonist within her visual tales.

Her photographic series 'Avoided Spaces' captures specific locations throughout London. Using her background in performance she entwines the elements of performative writing, staged photography and then the performance to create the final scene. Which is one filled with empty space and yet seemingly still so busy upon the printed surface.

The viewer is invited to muse over their relationship with the terrain that surrounds them daily and the seemingly vacant space between the cloud cover and the ground. The way the brilliance of light is captured seemingly so effortlessly by the artist is a real highlight of the work and adds an element of depth to it.

Her images remind me of something i was told once: "what appears to be grey is but a composite of pale tints". If they manage to remove the dust from that insightful comment for me then perhaps they can have a similarly welcome effect upon you.

Bethany will be showing in 'sideSHOW' at the Gallery Primo Alonso from the 5th - 28th September along side many other stirring contemporary artists. It will no doubt be well worth the effort to pay a visit and see her inspiring images.
