Anticipation II - Sarah Lederman Another painter deserving attention at Anticipation and who stood out from the other painters at the Chelsea Art College......

Another painter deserving attention at Anticipation and who stood out from the other painters at the Chelsea Art College degree show in June was Sarah Lederman.

Her deathly innocentes, at times developed and at times entirely child-like, sag like dolls on chairs and against bare walls; an environment influenced by fairytales, fantasies, castles. A potential sadness hangs over their awkward and gaunt poses; red paint that may be blood or smudged lipstick, dark eyes from bruises or eyeshadow. A run of black paint trickles down from one girl's pubic hair and stands out form the washed out colours around it.

The castle walls barely contrast and barely contain the pale skins of the nudes, accentuated by trembling contours that, as above, often fail to contain the colours they try to outline. 'The body becomes fluid, unfixed,' she says, 'containment...is something awkward and difficult.' The beauty lies in the fragility of this thin containment of form and innocence.

Lederman sold out at Anticipation, as well as selling other works not on display. Check out her site here.
