A few ways to spend an hour this week... The final traces of any city snow have now long gone and with it so have the cellophane wrapped......

The final traces of any city snow have now long gone and with it so have the cellophane wrapped Valentine's Day sentiments slapping the faces of the high street wanderers. Hooray to the latter. Here is as usual the pick of some of the art events happening in the capital this week. My humble selection of things that caught my eye, ear and whatever other senses I might have been using at the time of learning about them.

Tuesday 17th at the Chelsea Futurespace, Ian Giles is showing one of his video performance pieces. This young performance artist is one worth watching. Ian has a large body of work behind him already and everything I have seen to date is consistently impressive. Whether snaking bizarrely in and out of the runs of a ladder, dunking his head under water or smashing the belly of a boat to splinters there is always a message to be found and an aesthetic beauty through compositions and light to be appreciated. Wednesday 18th there is the private view in Westbourne Studios of 'artbelowzero'. This is a monthly event featuring art, design and music. It will showcase some of the talent, both past and present, coming out of the capital's leading art colleges. For further insight into this event click here.

The next evening of the 19th sees an interesting event at the Vegas Gallery titled 'Vampire Dreams Stay in the Light'. It is co-curated by Aline Duriaud and features the work of eight artists. All the work on show spirals from the metaphors and imagery related to vampires. Vampires are linked to death, seduction, life, loneliness and consumption and so are related to ourselves in more ways then one. It should be an engaging exhibition with a themed feel running throughout. For further details click here.

Sunday 22nd if you have a free afternoon there is a really interesting event taking place at the 176 Gallery on Kingsland Road. It is preview of work from Matt Stokes. There promises to be tea, cakes and a feast of art to see. It starts at 3pm and will close at 5pm. If you have not already been to this gallery then I strongly recommend it as for a few years now they have consistently been putting on imaginative exhibitions and showing some of the best up and coming artists around.
