Mike Whelan graduated from the University of East London after studying BA Photography in 2007. Whelan has recently exhibited at The Photographers Gallery, Brighton Photo Fringe and APT Gallery as well as being the recipient of several awards, including winning the Fine Art Single category at the 2009 NYPH awards and being a finalist in the Photographers Forum Best of Photography exhibition 2009. Whelan’s work ‘Ad-Sites’ focuses on the distinction between the utopian vision offered to us by town planners and the social reality which often attends the upheavals of regeneration. Deconstructing projections of pristine living Whelan’s images suggest an unseen social infrastructure that accompanies areas of gentrification.

Having taken numerous test shots Whelan's images are photographed in a square format that adds a geometric continuity between the hoardings and billboards. By pre-visualising the images Whelan makes slight adjustments to eliminate any lens distortion, while at the same time considers both the relationships between each image within the series and also the background and foreground of each subject.
