Matthew Musgrave
Graduating the Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2008, artist Matthew Musgrave was shortlisted in the same year for both the Culture House Award and the Boundary Gallery Prize for Figurative Art. His work has recently featured in two group shows, New Sensations and Best in Show. Exploring the demands that small scale works make on the viewer, Musgrave invites interrogative engagement with his pieces. The works simultaneously encourage close inspection and subvert expectations when discovered to be quite crude in construction, converting the examination of his art into a process of discovery. Often drawing on the colours and connotations of valuable artifacts, the paintings obstinately evade exact identification maintaining a veneer of mystery we are unable to penetrate.
