Sarah McNulty

Sarah McNulty has had two joint exhibitions in London in 2008 at the Wenlock Basin with Lucy Conochie and with Erika Nordqvist at Kingsgate Gallery, while her artist books are held in the collection of the V&A and Slade Duveen Libraries. Her atmospheric / weighted paintings have now achieved international recognition and earned her two residencies in Spain and The Netherlands. In 2007 her work was short-listed for the Celeste Art Prize and was a finalist in the MyArtSpace contest in New York. Her beguiling images pull the viewer deep into the layers of subdued colour to focus attention on the vivid brush strokes and static motion. Desultory shapes invade the muted canvass, hinting at a presence or an image just beyond our grasp. McNulty's beautiful work provides at once a peaceful whole and a dynamic array of contrasting components.

Oil on linen

Light tears out of a darkened canvass as though it has been torn, in this vivid competition of colour and motion. Although our eyes are drawn towards the lucent details, deceptively layered, unbroken strokes add a depth to the gloom creating an intriguing contrast of depth and tone.
