The photographs of Scandinavian Martina Lindqvist explore the ephemeral personalities of Finnish landscapes rich with personal history. Her 2008 Jerwood prize-winning series ‘Rågskär Island’ was created for the eye of the camera, from her own holiday photos and recollections of a place she visited repeatedly during her youth. The brooding and lonely landscapes underscore the inherent isolation of the island and the utter freedom of the individual put upon it. The proximity of the very real miniatures suggests this claustrophobia, but also a subjective ‘toying’ with the landscape – an expression of its re-invention through the memories and experiences of the time she has spent on the island.

Rågskär is a modest, rocky island situated 15 kilometres off the coast of central Finland. The hyper-realism of this image eerily conveys the overwhelming isolation that accompanies infinite freedom.
