Dan Howard-Birt

Dan Howard-Birt’s paintings show small, unexceptional actions undertaken by figures, often in isolation. Prised from their broader narratives, the significance of these moments is trapped or located in the act of painting. Subjects include troubled lives of early 20th century English painters; the journey of Nicolas Jenkins, from Anthony Powell's Dance to the Music of Time; the saints and Howard-Birt’s family. The simplicity of his clean, illustrative style belies loaded reference to modern-era painters and projections of the painters subjective conscious onto his figures and landscapes. Even trapped in the static medium, Howard-Birt’s moments seem to be in flux, curling up and falling away from the artist’s gaze.
