After graduating from Wimbledon College of Art in 2008 Sam Zealey was recently featured in last years BBC2 School of Saatchi series. Zealey has recently been shortlisted for A Curriculum, an A Foundation artist residency and is currently showing as part of this years Kenetic Art Fair (February). Having exhibited at both the Saatchi Gallery and Concrete and Glass festival, Zealey is currently working on a public sculpture commission by Jimmy Turner. Zealey’s practice appropriates popular household appliances and industrial aggregates in order to find strange and spectacular functions in their performances. Zealey is inspired by the particular properties of the materials he uses, which are often fundamental to the workings of the sculpture itself, enabling elusive energy to interact with the materials used.

Through controlled situations Zealey attempts to make exceptional experiences familiar. His kinetic and interactive sculptures reference modes of scientific research as he engineers celestial phenomena out of spinning tops, magnets, vacuum cleaners and running machines. Sound Shrine relies on the interaction of the viewer to complete an electronic circuit and activate the work, thus projecting a monotone sound reminiscent of chanting monks.
