Giles Ripley

Chelsea College graduate Giles Ripley was selected for New Contemporaries and as one of the Art World magazine's 20 best graduates in 2008. His videos strain between the glamorous allure of the generic cinema that and the assumed integrity of fine art. His largely one-man productions employ performance crafts like mime, masks and puppetry and monologue as well as ‘special effects’ like image transparency editing. Exaggerated and fictionalised narratives of his everyday life, and the filmmaking and performance that involves, nod to post-modern self-reference and genetic theory through his downbeat protagonist. As his mother puts it in Bill, his 'monotonous self-depreciation [...] offers no more than an unconvincing pastiche of more successful past attempts by people with far more talent than [him].'
