Erica Scourti

While recently curating ‘Incounter – Sound, Video, Text’ at Campbell Works Gallery, Erica Scourti has also exhibited internationally as part of exhibitions and film festivals in London, Berlin, Madrid, Utrecht and Rome. Graduating after studying BA Fine Art at Middlesex University in 2003, Erica Scourti won the viewer’s choice at this years Tenderpixel Festival at Soho Rushes Film Festival. Working mainly with digital media and video Scourti’s work examines the way the individual’s beliefs and dreams relate to and find expression within mass society through the language of shared cultural forms and clichés - such as entertainment, books, movies, and oral history. Scourti uses the interaction between the spoken voice and the visual image to question how identity is constructed through the repository of images within society.

Digital video on dvd, 2 min
Edition of 5

In Erica Scourti’s most recent videos such as ‘High Street Romantic’ and ‘Screen Tears’ the artist herself performs in the work. Often using appropriated language Scourti explores the tension between authentic self-expression and acting. As with her older works language forms the basis for both as a system of communication, and a material to be removed from its original context, stripped of syntax and rearranged.
