Fan Chon Hoo

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian artist and LCC graduate Fan Chon Hoo was recently selected for Saatchi New Sensations 2010 and is to be included in an exhibition touring Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing (October). Hoo’s practice involves investigating the process of cultural translation within the context of postcolonialism. Inspired by early figures of Victorian travellers and amateur naturalists, Hoo considers himself as an amateur antiquarian and anthropologist. ‘The Blue and White Collection’ plays out Baudrilliard’s sentiment that ‘collecting represents the most rudimentary way to exercise control over the outer world’. For the series Hoo made a set of paper earthenware printed with cyanotype, embellished with imaginary British landscapes juxtaposed by oriental follies found within the UK.

Presented for murmurART is the entire series of ‘The Blue and White Collection’. Attracted by the sense of familiarity of the material yet the unfamiliar cultural connotations Hoo replaced the Willow Pattern motif with collages of imaginary of British landscapes with oriental-looking follies found within the UK. For all these works Hoo painstakingly produces paper sculptures which he then photographs.
