Russell Hill graduated this year from studying Fine Art Sculpture at University of the Arts Wimbledon, a course currently producing some of the most exciting young sculptors under the artistic supervision of course director Sarah Woodfine. Hill’s practice responds to selected contemporary objects in a playful and carefully constructed methodical manner. Domestic objects and consumer products are stripped of their imagery to support the idea of mass production, while references to popular culture weave through contemporary visual strategies to intrigue the viewer. Hill’s spontaneous yet poignant selection and appropriation of materials reveals the fickle relationship between human and object.

Automatic air freshener machines, Batteries, Aerosol cans
Airwicks is made from 18 automatic air freshener machines. The sculpture operates on a timing mechanism releasing a surge of fragrance every 36 minutes, which over time creates a sensory experience that exploits the amount of trust and reliance one might invest in such a contemporary object.
