Jo Lathwood’s work acts as a poignant reminder of the fragile ecology between modes of human endeavor and natural resources. Living in Bristol and lecturing in Sculpture at Hastings College has influenced Jo Lathwood’s practice and travel and peripatetic research inform her work. Since graduating from BA Fine Art Sculpture at Brighton University in 2006 Lathwood has acted as artist-in-residence at L'H du Siege in Valenciennes (France, 2008), Artscape Gibraltar Point in Toronto (Canada, 2009) and AceArtInc in Winnipeg (Canada, 2009). Lathwood’s practice draws upon issues that are both immediate and relevant to us as a viewer, as her work is inspired by a meditation upon the dichotomy between simple natural beauty and the complex relationship we have with nature.

Specifically selected for murmurART ‘Emerald City’ and ‘Untitled’ show Lathwood’s intuitive and idiosyncratic use of materials. 'My practice aims to describe an emotional state through a physical space or object. I make fantasy-fuelled objects and invent journeys. It is important to me to use materials that are disregarded from everyday living. I want to provide an experience of the ephemeral within these structures, allowing the audience to reflect on the experience and the process.'
