Every item that we own has an origin. All that surrounds us in our homes and places of work, or as we journey through a modern metropolis has been extracted from the natural world. This perspective is carried through in Simon Carruthers’s work. Graduating from Brighton University in 2007, he has subsequently exhibited as part of both the Brighton Photo Fringe and ‘Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed’ at The Photographers’ Gallery. At the centre of Carruthers’s practice is a detailed and meticulous examination of the impact a globalised society has upon both the urban and rural landscape. His work sets out to document the methods and consequences of an accelerated climate of consumerism, while simultaneously developing a breathtaking aesthetic sensibility that conveys the meaning within the image.

Cut, drilled and quarried – pumped from the surroundings - their presence in our company is all but fleeting. As it is true that all of these items have an origin, so it is true that the components of the synthetic world have a destiny – a final resting place – for when we no longer require them. ‘Cycles’ refers to the title given to the project from which these five images have been selected.
