David Lisser

Fascinated by the wonderful and anything that blurs the boundaries of fact and fiction, David Lisser draws inspiration from folklaw, legend, old wives tales, and sayings. A Newcastle University graduate, he lives and practises in the North East; an area rich with stories, fables and unique turns of language. Responding primarily in sculpture, he enjoys the reciprocal relationship between object and story, exploiting this to create artefacts and museum objects. Awarded the Bartlett Travel Prize in 2009, David spent time in Italy researching Galileo’s and Da Vinci’s inventions. His fanciful machines are a direct response to this, presented in a style evocative of Victorian scientific instruments. They seek to create nostalgia for the hope that technology once gave us and cause us to question our over-reliance and naïve trust in technology today.
