David Murphy

David Murphy graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2006, was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, 2009 and exhibited at the Schwartz Gallery, London, 2009. His drawings enquire into how much 'the landscape' is defined by the human gaze or by the given world as well as considering how nature is regulated and manipulated for its usefulness. He draws aspects of nature from imagination, filtering and compressing subject matter to free up how it is understood. Subject matter is broad, encompassing historical artefacts, military history, transport, industry and storytelling. The possibility of what may be interpreted expands upon the marked ‘ground’. Mark and material heighten this slip between form and content.

For Murphy drawing is a restless activity – an effort to create an image. The ground itself is often marked with the traces of previous use: paper with folds, nicks and tears, or drawings on the reverse of other drawings. Such aberrations inform and become part of his drawings.
